First team 2009/2010
15 August - Marine 4 - Upton 1 - Upton tail off after first twenty minutes and go 4 - 0 down. Chris Thompson, the goalie, goes off with a suspected broken arm and is replaced by veteran Kevin Clutton before substitute Carl Bishop gets a late consolation goal.
19 August - Upton 2 - Blacon Youth Club 1 - A typical close fought local derby with Upton coming out on top with goals from James Bignall and Nathan Freeman. Blacon scored from the penalty spot to give a nail biting finish. The officials for this game were excellent.
21 August - Ellesmere Port 1 Upton 2 - Upton go 2 up as Club Captain Andy Lloyd celebrates the birth of his first baby, a boy born on Wednesday morning (Owen), with 2 goals. Despite a lot of pressure during the second half in which we conceded a goal we managed to hang on for the three points.
26 August - Christleton 3 Upton 1 - How did we lose this one? I'll tell you why - missed chances, poor decisions by the officials, no truthfully we didn't deserve to win, we should have but did not deserve to. Consolation goal scored by Danny Andrews.
29 August -Upton 2 Castrol Social 0 - Both teams missed chances in the first half but Upton went ahead when Tom Fellows scored. Castrol upped the pace of the game but a late second goal by Nathan Freeman ensured an Upton victory.
2 September - Upton 1 Helsby 4 - Both teams played good football but on the night Helsby's first touch was better than ours. We missed two very good early chances that should have put us in front but two great saves by their keeper stopped us. We should have had two penalties in the first half but at the end of the day Helsby were worthy winners, our consolation coming from the penalty spot with a goal from Reggie Smart.
5 September - Upton 1 Cammel Laird 5 - A very poor Upton performance where too many players did not play to their ability. Could have been 2 goals up at the start of the game but got no more than we deserved. Our consolation goal was scored late on by Simon Andrews.
12 September - Maghull1 Upton 1 - Upton won the game in the first half but Maghull fought back in the second and scored the equaliser after about 60 minutes. Reggie Smart scored Upton's goal.
19 September - Spurley Hey 2 Upton 2 - after extra time - Cheshire County Amateur Challenge Cup. We went one goal down in the first half with J Kane scoring an equaliser 20 minutes from the end. Nathan Freeman hit the woodwork so the game went into extra time. Simon Andrews scored in the first period of extra time but Spurley Hey managed to equalise. The replay is at Upton next Saturday.
26 September - Upton 4 Spurley Hey 1 - Cup replay from last week - Should have scored more goals - too many missed chances including a penalty but with two goals from James Bignall and one apiece for Jonathan Bygroves and Simon Andrews
3 October - Heswall 3 Upton 1 - We should have got a point from this game but again did not take our chances. Heswall were 1-0 up at the start of the second half and added a second within a few minutes. Upton fought back with a great 25 yard shot which went in off the post scored by Simon Andrews and we were right back in the game. Then we squandered chances to draw level and could even have taken the lead before Heswall scored a late 3rd goal.
10 October - Willaston 3 Upton 2 - Upton throw it away in the second half!! Playing some really good football and taking a 2 - 0 lead by half time with goals from John Paul Kane and Simon Andrews Upton then threw it away with a very poor second half performance and conceded 3 goals to lose 3 - 2. Certainly need to get back to winning ways to stay clear of the drop zone.
17 October - Upton 3 Vauxhall Motors 3 - Upton had to settle for a draw with goals from Simon Andrews and 2 from Paul Broster. Need to get back to winning ways.
24 October - Upton 5 Ashville 6 - how can you score 5 goals at home and still lose the game? We were quite simply awful - Ashville thoroughly deserved their victory with a spirited performance that showed they wanted to win - and they did. Upton should take a leaf out of their book. A hat trick from stalwart Simon Morris and 2 from Reggie Smart were just not enough to stop 4 goal hero Adam Johnson and a goal apiece from Matt Singleton and Jamie Garry.
31 October - Upton 0 - Runcorn Town 7 - well - what can you say - we played well for the first 40 mins or so but then we missed a penalty and Runcorn scored three in the last 15 mins of the first half. We collapsed in the second half letting in a further four goals.
7 November - Upton 1 - Newton 6 - Another very poor game for Upton with Paul Broster scoring the consolation goal as they get hit for six! Richard Smart was Upton's man of the match.
14 November - Willaston 3 Upton 4 Upton AAFC had 2 players sent off after 10 minutes and had to play for 80 minutes with 9 men against 11. A great performance in the circumstances and particularly after our last visit to Willaston where we threw away a 2 goal lead, this time we get the right result. In form Simon Andrews led the charge with another goal ably assisted by Pat Walsh, Derek Rodgers and Tom Fellows.
21 November - Blacon Yth Club 1 Upton 5 - On a wet and windy afternoon this local derby was never going to be a showcase. In form Simon Andrews again led the charge with a superb hat trick. Upton went in 2 - 1 up at the interval after Simon Andrews fired into the lead , this was followed by a goal from Pat Walsh, (2 in 2 games since moving up from the reserves). Upton increased their lead early in the second half when Simon Andrews scored his second, Captain Andy Lloyd scored the next before Simon popped in his third of the game. Great result in poor conditions.
5 December - City Bar 1 Upton 2 - In a game that should have been won by half time with at least 6 clear chances going begging ( 4 of which fell to Simon Andrews) Upton made hard work of it going in only 1 - 0 up at the break with a fine shot from Pat Walsh. Soon after the break City Bar equalised and Upton continued to squander their chances, in fact City Bar could have taken the lead at one time before the Diutchman, Arjon Wolfsharr arrived at the far post with a bullet header to put Upton into the next round.
2 Jan 2010 - Upton 3 Maghull 5 - After storming into a 2 goal lead after twenty minutes with goals from Simon Andrews (pen) and Will Kelly Upton let the game slip away allowing Maghull tp pull back to 2 - 2 by half time, Maghull should have lead 3 - 2 but for a missed penalty. Carl Bishop came on for Upton replacing Tom Fellows at half time and it was Carl who got Upton back into the game with a fine finish to level the scores at 3 - 3. Poor defending cost Upton dear as Maghull slotted in two late goals to win 5 - 3.
16 Jan - Helsby 7 Upton 2 - We were 2 up, missed a penalty and went in 2-2 at half time - the scorers were Simon Andrews and Derek Rogers. Then it all went wrong. - after 60 minutes, our keeper, Chris Thompson had to leave the field injured and - well you can see the final score.....
23 Jan - Newton 2 Upton 1 - Newton controlled the first 20 minutes and then Upton settled down. Upton gave away a penalty to go 1-0 down. Then Upton were awarded a penalty after Simon Andrews was brought down by the keeper. Simon Andrews scored from the spot. Simon "scored" again with a great header but the goal was disallowed for a foul on the centre half. 1 - 1 at half time. Upton started the second half much stronger and dominated the game until Newton broke away and scored with a deflected goal. Upton had many chances to win the game but lost 2 - 1. A much better performance.
30 Jan - Upton 1 - Halton 2 - This was a very good close game. We went ahead with a Simon Andrews penalty but Halton equalised and then early in the second half Halton scored what proved to be the winner.
6 Feb - Castrol Social 0 - Upton 1 - It was 0-0 at half time after Upton had Ben McKean sent off for his second yellow card, Upton battled on with 10 men and midway through the second half Simon Andrews let loose from just inside the box to score and secure three points and a very valuable win.
13 Feb - Upton 3 Ellesmere Port 1 - Despite taking the lead after about 15 minutes Ellesmere Port were not strong enough to hold onto a slender lead and ten minutes before half time the in form Simon Andrews ran onto a superb through ball to beat the keeper with a well placed shot. 1 - 1 at the interval. A long Stuart Denham throw in was back headed by Reggie Smart and looped in over the keepers outstretched arms. Upton continued to take the game to EP and Simon Andrews rounded off a fine performance with his second of the game after 80 minutes to give the ever improving side a deserved 3 - 1 win.
20 Feb - Pyke Cup - Helsby 3 Upton 4 - On an awful pitch this was never going to be easy. Helsby went 2-0 up with a quickly taken free kick and a quickly taken corner, Upton were caught asleep. but rallied in the last five minutes of the half with 2 great shots from Will Kelly, half time 2 - 2.The second half became very scrappy and Upton went ahead through Nathan Freeman who tapped in a cross from close range. Helsby then had two players sent off before Upton were awarded a penalty, the goalkeeper was extremely lucky to only get a yellow card! Will Kelly stepped up to take the penalty for his hat-trick but a weak shot allowed the keeper to dive to his left low down and save. Reggie Smart popped up to score for Upton to make the game safe at 4 - 2 before Helsby were awarded a very late penalty from which they scored. final result 4- 3 to Upton. They now meet the winners of Runcorn v West Kirby tie.
27 Feb- Upton 1 Willaston 4 - Willaston bossed Upton out of the game in the first half an hour going 2 - 0 up before Upton's captain, Andy Lloyd pulled one back with a drilled shot from 12yards, half time 2 - 1 to Willaston. Upton performed slightly better early in the second half, twice the referee should have played the advantage rule but didn't. Willaston sealed the game with a third goal which was undoubtedly offside, even Willaston said so!! Another late goal gave them a 4 - 1 victory which flattered but they deserved to win.
6 March - Upton 2 Marine Res 0 - Stuart Denham fired Upton ahead after 35 minutes from a great cross from Simon Andrews. It was always going to be a tough game but Upton clinched it with a well taken flighted free kick by Paul Broster, which beat the Marine keeper and drifted into the far top corner of the net. A good win to relieve some of the pressure at the wrong end of the table.
10 March - Halton 1 Upton 2 - Upton continue to climb clear. Carl Bishop was brought down in the 23rd minute and Simon Andrews kindly obliged from the penalty spot. In the 32nd minute Nathan Freeman broke away on the halfway line and received a superb through ball from Pat Walsh and slotted home a great goal. In the second half Halton scored a scrappy goal in the 65th minute but Upton thoroughly deserved all three points.
13 March - Upton 6 Peacock 1 - In the first half Upton AAFC missed chances and just could not score leaving The Peacock to take the one chance they had to go into a shock 1 - 0 half time lead. The second half however was a very different story as the undisciplined Peacock team had several players booked and 2 sent off as Upton scored six times with 4 goals coming from the in form Simon Andrews and 2 from Captain Andy Lloyd, the second one from the penalty spot.
20 March - Upton 2 Heswall 1 - Nathan Freeman put Upton ahead after 23 minutes when his pace beat the defence as he ran onto a through ball to slot it past the helpless Heswall keeper. Heswall equalised soon after half time before one of their players was rightly red carded for a trip in the area and the ever reliable Simon Andrews stepped up to slot home the penalty to give Upton the much needed maximum 3 points.
27 March - Pyke Cup Semi Final - West Kirby 4 Upton 2 - West Kirby scored first but before the break Upton should have equalised when Nathan Freeman hit the post. After the interval they scored again twice to go three up, Upton then really went up a gear and pulled two goals back with firstly Simon Andrews and then Nathan Freeman scoring to make it 3 -2. Unfortunately for Upton Will Kelly was sent off after a second yellow card and a last minute penalty gave West Kirby a very flattering 4 - 2 win as overall Upton played excellently but had no luck on the day.
2 April - Chester Snr Cup Semi Final - Upton 2 Highfield 2 - Upton win on Penalties 3 - 1 - Highfield certainly made Upton work hard to grind out the right result in this game. On a cold and wet Good Friday on a sloping pitch (Why important games are played here I do not know!) neither side could take the advantage in the first half. Early in the second half Simon Andrews beat two defenders before chipping the ball over the keeper and under the crossbar to fire Upton into the lead, a truly class goal at any standard of football!! This looked like being the winner until the 6th minute of injury time (where this all came from I do not know!!!) and Highfield snatched an equaliser. The referee then played on for a further minute!! Still on a high Highfield took the lead early in the first period of extra time until Simon Andrews popped up at the far post with a fine header to level the scores. The rest of the game was played out with chances at both ends. The game was then decided on penalties with Highfield to take first and miss, they only scored one with their next three kicks whilst Upton scored through, Simon Andrews, Andy Shelton and Reggie Smart to win through on penalties by 3 - 1.
3 April - Cammel Laird 4 Upton 0 - After a pretty even first half with Upton conceding just one goal, the second half was a different story as Upton faded and tired after yesterdays cup game which went into extra time. The injury to skipper Andy Lloyd yesterday stopped him playing today and he was greatly missed as the home team scored three more goals to win 4 - 0.
7 April - Upton 1 Christleton 1 - After 7 minutes the Christleton keeper failed to hold a cross and Simon Andrews was on hand to tap home the easiest goal he will score this season! The rest of the first half was a typical end of season game with nothing to play for and the second half was no better except that Reggie Smart hit the crossbar which really should have put Upton 2 - 0 up but instead as they pressed for the second goal (rather than defend their lead) they got caught and a long punt upfield 3 minutes from time was pounced upon Christleton to steal an equaliser, they were happy, Upton were not!!
14 April - Upton 0 West Kirby 2 – This was a physical game. Upton played well but didn’t see any result for their efforts. The West Kirby Manager was sent to the stands in the first half, which ended goalless. Upton’s star players were the goalkeeper Callum Hawthorn and Stuart Cossins who was on temporary promotion from the reserves. The physical nature of the game was reflected in the fact that both teams ended the match with 10 men.
17 April Vauxhall Motors Res 2 Upton 0 - typical end of season game. Having played well against West Kirby a few days earlier Upton were poor with Vauxhall scoring a goal in each half.
19 April - W Kirby 2 Upton 0 – good performance particularly goalkeeper Callum Hawthorn, centre half Andy Lloyd and centre forward Simon Andrews. West Kirby scored a goal in each half.
26 April - Runcorn Town 4 Upton 1 - due to work commitments Upton were forced to field a mixture of first team and reserve players. It was a workmanlike performance with Tom Fellowes scoring our only goal.
14 May - Upton Nomads In a repeat of last years final when Nomads were worthy winners it was Upton who tried to play the football and were well on top of the game until their inspirational captain Andy Lloyd was sent off for bringing down a Nomads player on the edge of the box. This changed the game and it became a scrappy long ball game. Only Upton tried to play any football but at both half and full time the score remained 0 - 0. Extra time was no different but as Upton tired it always looked that Nomads could snatch a victory. 10 man Upton held out and took the game to penalties. With the score at 3 - 3 Nomads took their 5th penalty to win the game but unfortunately player/manager John Cadwallader hit the post, a costly miss as Upton scored the next two penalties whilst Nomads missed again, Upton had their revenge on last season by winning 5 - 4 on penalties to once again become the top team in Chester.
15 August - Upton Res 1 Prescott Cables 2 - After a goal less first half Prescott take the lead before Upton equalise from the penalty spot with a goal from Ian Hastings. Despite having a player sent off Prescott continued to play the better football and scored the winner about five minutes before the end of the game. Prescott the better footballing side but Upton still had more chances.
17 August - Blacon Res 1 - Upton Res 4. A good result for our reserves beating Blacon reserves 4 - 1. Our experience told over youth and enthusiasm on a very bouncy pitch with goals from Paul Armor, Nathan Freeman, Mike Bowell and Ian Hastings.
22 August - Upton Res 1 - Ellesmere Port Res 2 - Looking for their second win in a week unfortunately a lone goal by Nathan Freeman was not enough to overcome Ellesmere Port Reserves who ran out 2 - 1 winners.
24 August - Christleton Res 1 - Upton Res 0 - What a great game in Division 3. An excellent local derby with Christleton winning with a late goal.
28 August - Upton Res 4 St Werburghs 2. After the disappointment of losing 1 - 0 earlier in the week Upton bounce back with a convincing win against St Werburghs. Goal scorers were Stuart Cossins, Jonathon Bygroves, Kevin Ginever and Mike Bowell.
1 September - Upton Res 0 - Capenhurst Villa Res 1. After just 4 minutes Capenhurst scored an early goal which was enough to decide the game. Despite numerous chances throughout the game including 5 in the last 5 minutes we just could not score!! How did we lose this one?
5 September - Ashville Res 5 Upton Res 3 - We gave away too many goals to stand any chance of winning this game. Our scorers were Richard Kean, Mike Bowell and Kevin Ginever.
12 September - Chester Nomads Res 0 Upton Res 2 - Chester and District Challenge Cup - a comfortable win for Upton - our scorers being Paul Armour and Kevin Ginever
19 September - Upton 3 Hale 0 A comfortable win - goals from Paul Armour, Richard Kean and Stuart Cossins.
26 September - Mossley Hill Res 1 Upton Res 5 - Playing the best football they have played in a long time with quick one touch play Upton Reserves strolled into a 4-0 half time lead. 2 goals from Andy Shelton (1 a pen), 2 from Richard Keane and 1 from Mike Bowell secured an easy 5 - 1 final score.
3 October - Runcorn Town Res 5 Upton 1 - A very poor game for the reserves with far too many defensive errors. Upton's consolation goal scored by Mike Bowell.
11 October - Upton 6 Southport Trinity Reserves 3 - Upton Reserves got back to winning ways with a 6 - 3 win over Southport Trinity Reserves. Mark Thompson led the way with 3 goals ably supported with a goal apiece from Paul Armor, Mike Bowell and Mike Lewis.
17 October - Mersey Royal 0 Upton Res 3 - After a hat trick last week Mark Thompson becomes the season's joint top scorer as he continues his run of form with another 2 goals , Pat Walsh scored the other goal. They are slowly making their way up the table after a poor start.
24 October - Manor Athletic 2 Upton 1 - Manor took the lead before Mike Bowell equalised before half time. Manor scored a late goal to secure the points but Upton were unlucky not to get at least a draw.
31 October - Runcorn Town Res 5 Upton 3 - being holders of Shield trophy meant nothing to Runcorn as we went out in the first round - we were in contention at half time as the score was three apiece but Runcorn came good in the second half - scorers were Jonathan King and two goals for Arjan Van De Wolfsharr .
7 November - Duddon 1 Upton Res 5 - Upton were far too strong for the Chester league side and had a very comfortable win. Pat Walsh 3, Paul Armor 1 and Mark Thompson 1 were the goal scorers.
14 November - Upton 0 Runcorn 6 - not a lot to say except that the cynical amongst us may point out that the Runcorn first team didn't have a game but we don't want to take anything away from Aaron Brown who scored 4 goals.
21 November - Capenhurst Villa Res 2 Upton Res 2 - Our reserves had a good sporting game away to Capenhurst Villa Reserves, playing well and really deserving to win. Our goals were scored by Mark Thompson and Kevin Sharpe in a 2 - 2 draw.
5 December - Blacon Yth Club Res 3 Upton Res 2 - This was a very close game with Blacon just edging it, Very disappointing result for Upton whose scorers were Ian Hastings and Jake Warne.
12 December - Southport Trinity Res 2 Upton Res 1 - Ian Hastings opened the scoring to put Upton AAFC reserves 1- 0 up at half time. Two very poor defensive errors early in the second half cost us dearly and Southport Trinity reserves ran out 2 - 1 winners
23 Jan - Upton Res 0 Ashville Res 3 - Both teams played good entertaining football and the reserves battled well to be all square at half time. Upton then lost their keeper with a foot injury early in the second half this was followed by Ashville scoring a scrappy goal which was followed by an extremely harsh penalty decision from which they scored, this completely changed the game and Ashville scored their 3rd late in the game..
6 Feb - Upton Res 2 - Mossley Hill Res 1 - Upton made hard work of the first half and should have been 2 up but missed chances saw the score line at 0-0 at halftime. Upton took the lead midway through the second half with fine goal scored by Jacob Warne. Mossley Hill fought back and equalised late in the game, it looked all set for the draw until Nathan Freeman saw the keeper off his line and his speculative shot from fully 25 yards hit the back of the net. Mossley Hill kicked off and the referee blew the final whistle, game over 2 - 1 to Upton.
12 Feb - Ellesmere Port Res 1 - Upton Res 1 - In a tightly contested first half Nathan Freeman put Upton ahead after 30 minutes. The second half was also tight and EP scored the equaliser 2 minutes from time, although a Nathan Freeman shot was cleared off the line in the last minute, all in all a fair result.
20 Feb - Upton Res v Mersey Royal. Mersey Royal failed to turn up or contact either our club or the League. Subsequently the Referee duly waited until 2.30pm before calling the game off. Most of the reserve team players then went to watch the first team at Helsby. Apparently Mersey Royal finally arrived at our ground at 3.15pm and remonstrated with the referee. he explained that he called the game off at 2.30pm.
15 March - Richmond Raith Rovers 1 - Upton Res 0 - On a very poor playing surface Upton certainly deserved a share of the spoils. the wind spoilt the day which had very few attempts on goal from either side. In the third minute of added time RRR scored after the Upton keeper Michael Derkaz made a great save only to leave the forward with a tap in goal, disappointing result!
20 March - Hale 4 - Upton 3 - Hale romped into a 4 - 0 lead after just 35 minutes! A tremendous fight back from the lads saw Mike Bowell pull one back before half time and further goals from Derek Rodgers and Sean Lynch were just not quite enough to earn a share of the spoils. A great fight back which deserved to get something from the game against the league's leaders.
27 March - Upton 0 - Manor Athletic 2 - Upton should have had this game over and done with by half time but could not score from the chances they created. The second half was very different as Manor pushed forward to score twice, a result that did not look possible at half time.
29 March - Upton 1 - Blacon Res 0 - At last a result for David Owen and Kevin. The Reserves may have played better in recent weeks without winning. After 10 minutes Mark Thompson scored from close range from a corner. Within 5 minutes Blacon ballooned a penalty over the bar. The remainder of the first half was even and closely fought without troubling the goalkeepers. The second half began well for Blacon but created very few chances and gradually the Reserves began to create chances of their own. At least three headers were squandered from crosses from the right wing and a right foot shot (I repeat right foot shot) from Steve Rowlands was narrowly wide. However Blacon hit the foot of the post from 25 yards but for the final 10 minutes Upton remained untroubled.
3 April - Upton Res 4 - Mersey Royal 5 - What a funny game this turned out to be! 3 - 1 down at half time Upton fought back in the second half to take a 4 - 3 lead after 75 minutes. 2 late goals from the visitors game them a 5 - 4 win. Upton's goals came from Mark Thomson 3 and 1 from Paul Finch.
10 April - Upton Res 3 Christleton Res 2 - typical local derby - not a lot in the game with the teams going in 1 -1 at half time. Goals from Mark Lewis (penalty), Paul Finch and Stuart Cossins edged it for Upton.
17 April - Upton Res 3 R R R 5 – Upton’s scorers were Stuart Cossins, Mike Lewis and Mark Thompson. It was 2 -2 at half time and 3 – 3 with 10 minutes to go before Upton fell away letting in two goals.
21 April - Prescott Cables Res 4 - Upton 0 - Upton started slowly going in one down at half time. We competed well in the second half but ran out of steam in the last 10 minutes.
