First Team match reports 2008/2009

Sat 25 April - A great day for the club, coming back from 1-0 down at half time to clinch the runners up spot in the league  with three goals in the second half. Two goals from Simon Andrews (1 a penalty) and 1 from Reggie Smart ensured our highest ever finish, well done lads and well done the two Daves in their first season as first team managers.

Wed 22 April - We did not deserve anything from the game and lost 3 - 0!! Ex player John Cadwallader was the man of the match for Chester Nomads scoring 2 of their goals. Despite more possession Upton were unable to break down a tall, strong back five and never really threatened. Congratulations to Nomads winning this trophy for the first time since 1979.  Final score Chester Nomads 3 Upton AAFC 0. Now we must re-group for our game away to C. Llairds on Saturday in our pursuit for the runners up spot in Division 1 of the West Cheshire League.

Sat 18 April - Upton seemed to be showing signs of too many games in the space of  a few days - we had a strong team out but we were very poor going down 0 - 2. We missed chance after chance and at one down we tried too late in the game to get something from it and got caught as Ellesmere Port hit us on the break to score their second goal.

Wed 15 April - Upton surprised and shook West Kirby by taking a 2 goal lead with goals from Joe Worrell and a penalty from Simon Andrews. West Kirby showed they are the divisions champions for the third consecutive year by fighting back with 2 goals from Chris Reilly to level. The final score 2 - 2.  Congratulations to West Kirby for being the West Cheshire Division 1 Champions for 2008/09.

Sat 11 April - Newton took an early lead on a very bumpy pitch before James Bignall equalised after 25 minutes. Simon Andrews gave Upton the lead 3 minutes before half time. The second half was very tight with Upton hitting the woodwork twice, both teams looked very tired following their cup games the day before. Final score 2 - 1 to Upton who now move into second place. A great Easter for the club

Fri 10 April - We are in The Chester Senior Cup Final. To be played on Wednesday 22nd April at Christleton. Our opponents will be Chester Nomads who beat Blacon Y C 3-1 today. Highfield took a deserved half time lead with a great free kick from just outside the box. Upton took advantage of the slope in the second half and equalised through James Bignall with eighteen minutes left to play. After giving the opposition a battering late on Gareth Edwards scored with a great header following a superb headed attempt by Captain Andy Lloyd.

Sat 4 April - Upton AAFC  had a hard game in windy conditions with a goal from Tom Fellows in the first half being enough to secure 3 points for Upton which keeps us in third place.

Wed 1 April - A great win tonight away to high fliers Runcorn Town keeps the pressure on at the top of the Division. Two early goals from James Bignall (his first of the season) and Danny Andrews caught Runcorn cold. They fought back well to 2-1 before half time and kept the pressure on for the equaliser in the second half until a late goal (his 16th of the season) from Danny Andrew secured the 3 points despite an injury time goal from Runcorn. Final score Runcorn 2 Upton 3.

Sat 28 March - In a game spoilt by high winds Upton first team played the better football on the ground and beat a good Marine side 3 - 1 with 2 goals from Simon Andrews and 1 from Dave Roberts.

Sat 21 MarchA much better performance today in beating local rivals Christleton 2 -1. Upton were on top for all of the first half and after a Simon Andrews penalty Luke Jackson provided the perfect cross for Tom Fellows to score the second. We took our foot off the pedal in the second half and allowed Christleton a glimmer of hope when they scored but in the end we ran out worthy winners and remain 4th in the league whereas Christleton are 14th.

Sat 14 March - Bad day all round (see also reserve report) - lost 3 - 0 at home and dropped a position to 4th in the league. Some players were missing and those that did play did not perform to their potential. There will have to be a significant improvement next week in the derby mach against Christleton.

Sat 7 March - Upton AAFC were given a scare by a young and fast Halton team and went in at half time a goal down. Fortunately we played a little better in the second half and goals from captain Simon Andrews and Martin Gaulton secured a much needed win to retain any interest at the top of the table

Sat 28 February - Upton lost their goalkeeper Chris Thompson after twenty minutes with a suspected broken leg - (later we had the good news that the leg was not broken) - and then lost their way going in 2 - 0 down at half time. Despite Aintree having a man sent off in the second half Upton never recovered and even goals from Dave Roberts and Luke Jackson could not prevent the loss as Aintree also scored two second half goals.

Sat 21 February - A solid performance all round with Gareth Edwards and Robbie Dean outstanding. Two goals from Simon Andrews and one from Mike Moran sealed the victory for Upton.

Sat 14 February - Upton AAFC first team progress to the next round of the Chester & District Senior Cup, Despite not taking advantage of first half chances that should have put the game beyond Christleton, Upton were only 1 - 0 up at half time with a goal from Robbie Dean. Christleton took control in the second half with a goal to level the scores. In extra time Christleton took the lead before Gareth Edwards scored for Upton with a great header from a last minute corner to take the game to penalties. It could have gone either way with both teams having chances to progress to the next round but after 26 penalties Upton ran out the winners by 9 goals to 8!!! (Robin went home sad, Peter & Barry went home happy.) - for info - Robin, Peter, Barry and I meet at the Bear's Paw most Fridays - webmaster.

Sat 31 January - We found ourselves up against a strong Poulton side, who, although a number of places below us the the league have quite a few games in hand - they ran out worthy 2 - 0 winners on the day

Sat 17 January 2009  Vauxhall Motors took a first half lead from which, unfortunately, we never recovered. Despite all our second half efforts including a very dubious disallowed goal we were unable to score. A very disappointing result especially as we were by far the better team.

Sat 3 January 2009 - The first team game was on against Blacon YC and Upton took the lead with a goal from centre half Gareth Edwards but a poor back pass was intercepted and Blacon equalised just before half time. A Luke Jackson goal early in the second half proved to be the winner for Upton who move up to second in the league. Upton new signing from Airbus, Richard Smart played.

Sat 27 December - We had a great day today beating Newton 4 - 3. With games in hand they were well in contention at the top of the table but with 2 goals from Simon Andrews, 1 goal from brother Danny and 1 from Luke Jackson Upton ran out deserved winners in this Christmas thriller.

Sat 20 December - An excellent away win, leading 1 - 0 at half time with a goal from Simon Andrews after 5 minutes. Early in the second half captain Andy Lloyd was sent off for disrespect towards the referee after an extremely dubious penalty was awarded to Marine, justice was done however with a brilliant save by Chris Thompson. Upton scored again with a second goal for the very impressive Simon Andrews who worked tirelessly throughout the game. This result puts Upton in fourth position in the league.

Sat 6 December - Chester Snr Cup Round 2 - after going one down Upton ran out easy winners 10 - 1. There really is a big difference between West Cheshire and Chester and District football. At half time the score was 4 - 1. Upton scorers were Danny Andrews 2, Andy Lloyd 1, Gary Edwards 2, Dave Roberts 2, Tom Fellows 3,

Sat 29 November - On an awful pitch, on a very icy cold foggy day and after Simon Andrews missed a first half penalty it looked like being one of those days. In the second half the fog lifted long enough to save Simon's blushes when Michal Godras blasted home a left foot volley to give Upton maximum points

Sat 22 November - A poor Upton performance with several players carrying injuries resulting in two forced substitutions, not a good day.  With no first team game, Stalybridge were a very strong side and deservedly won the game, 6 - 0 - we will watch with interest in the next rounds of this cup competition.

Sat 15 November - Playing away with a weakened team to a more than useful Aintree Villa side Upton missed several easy chances and so did Aintree. It was left to both Upton fullbacks with a goal each to show the forwards how it is done. Firstly Joel Worrell gets his first goal for the club to give Upton the lead. Then veteran ( well he is at least 45!! ) stand in goalkeeper Kevin "Scholari" Clutton saves a penalty before Upton concede a late goal to level up the scores, then in added time Robbie Dean gets his first goal to give Upton a late 2 - 1 victory.

Sat 1 November - Upton AAFC first team lose at home to Poulton Vics 2- 0 and drop to 4th in the league. Vics had by far the better of the first half and could have been more than 2 up at half time. Upton faired better in the second half but missed chances to salvage a point. They certainly missed Simon Andrews up front and Goalkeeper Chris Thompson, hopefully they will both be back next week.

Sat 25 October - A fine 3 - 0 win over Broadheath Central with 2 goals from Danny Andrews and an absolute unstoppable screamer from central defender Martin Gaulton made it look easy. Broadheath worked hard and the game was extremely clean and played in the very best of spirits, how the referee could book 8 players is beyond belief!!  Broadheath were very disappointed to have 5 players booked and so were Upton to have 3 booked, it was totally unnecessary.

Sat 18 October - Upton AAFC drew 1 - 1 away to Vauxhall Motors, it was a close fought game with Upton missing the better of the opportunities and could/should really have won.Mikal Godras was Upton's goalscorer

Sat 11 October - UPTON AAFC away to Ellesmere Port came from behind to win 2 - 1. After a goal less first half E P took the lead early after the restart from a disputed penalty Upton replied with a great header from Akos and a Danny Andrews penalty. It should have been easy with the chances we wasted and the penalty appeals that we had turned down but this was a game we were never going to lose.

Sat    4 October - 2nd round Pyke Cup - With four players out the first team they struggled and after an extremely poor first half performance were lucky to be level, a fine strike by Simon Andrews levelling the score at half time. The second half was by far a better half for Upton but a breakaway goal from Vauxhall's proved the be the winner UPTON HAD MOST OF THE CHANCES AND MOST OF THE POSSESSION in this half

Sat 27 September - A solid performance by our first team beating Halton 4 - 2. Danny Andrews 2 (1 pen) with Simon Andrews and Mickal Godras getting 1 each.

Sat 13 September - Michael Godras scored Upton’s first goal (and his first for Upton) on 20 minutes with a superb volley, We went in two up at half time but Heswall pulled it back to 2 – 2 before Ollie Robinson came off the bench to settle the game. Simon and Danny Andrews scored the other two goals

Wed 3 September - Goals from Danny Andrews and Ollie Robinson gave Upton a 2 - 0 half time lead in what was the most thrilling and exciting amateur game that has been seen for a long time. In the second half Runcorn pulled one back and then, after enormous pressure during the final ten minutes Upton's defence cracked and Runcorn equalised

Sat 30 August - The first team getting a deserved draw 2 - 2 at West Kirby, last years champions. Upton came from behind twice to deny the champions. A great first half goal, his first this season, for Simon Andrews who beat the keeper with a very well placed angled drive followed by a second half powerful header from Martin Gaulton. In a hectic last ten minutes with both teams going for the win it could have gone either way with both sides missing opportunities to score a winner.

Wed 27 August - Whilst Upton had most of the possession Christleton went ahead early in the second half with a scrappy goal scored by Ian Michell. Upton then controlled the game but just could not score until the last minute when Martin Gaulton drilled the ball past the Christleton keeper to level the scores at 1 - 1.

Sat 23August - We squandered several first half chances to go ahead against Camell Llairds and their keeper made three excellent saves to keep the score at 0-0 at half time. They scored three goals in the second half as we seemed to lose our shape and they deservedly won 3-0.

Wed 20 August - A great away win for Upton 2 - 1 at Blacon. It was Blacon's first game of the season with a new look, young enthusiastic team out to prove themselves, full of energy, and very, very quick but we deservedly  won and could have scored more but squandered several opportunities. Danny Andrews equalised after Blacon opened the scoring and an absolute scorcher from Ollie Robinson deservedly gave us the three points.

Sat 16 August - A great start for the first team winning 3-2 away to Maghull. A Danny Andrews hat trick ( including 2 penalties) did the trick.

Reserve team match reports 2008/2009

Fri 1 May - What a great way to finish the season. our reserves were tremendous to out-play Ashville reserves to win the West Cheshire Shield by 3 - 0. After a first half when Upton should really have been ahead they applied the pressure in the second half with three great goals. The first and probably the most important with a well placed effort from Richard Keen. This was followed by two goals from Nathan Freeman, one from his feet and one from a great header to end the season on a high, well done lads.

Mon 29 April - Tonight's game was a very entertaining game which finished all square at 2 - 2. For the record Upton scorers were Nathan Freeman and Mike Bowell. Everybody is looking forward to Friday's Division 3 shield final against Ashville reserves, KO 7.00pm at Vauxhall Motors

Sat 25 April - Came back from being 1-0 down to win 4-3. Goals by Simon Law, Nathan Freeman and 2 from Mark Thompson. Spirits are running high as the reserves play their last league game on Monday at home to Christleton Reserves and follow this up with a cup final against Ashville Reserves on Friday evening.

Mon 19 April - Typical end of season game, despite 65% possession, a missed penalty and several other opportunities we could just not score! We were punished for this with the home team going in 1 - 0 at half time. Despite superior possession again in the second half we never looked like scoring and the home team scored again late in the game to give us no chance of a share of the points. Final score: Capenhurst Villa Res 2  Upton AAFC Res 0.

Tues 14 April - Upton AAFC reserves started the game well against Ashville Reserves taking an early lead through Ian Hastings. Ashville soon equalised but within minutes Upton regained the lead with a goal from Nathan Freeman. A very strong Ashville side fought back well to take a 4 - 2 lead before Upton responded late on with a goal from substitute Mike Bowell. The two sides will meet again in two weeks in a cup final that should be a thriller if tonight's game is anything to go by

Wed 8 April - After taking a shock lead with a goal scored by the Blacon centre forward Leroy, Upton fought back to lead at half time with Tom Mackerel and Liam Durkin both scoring their first goals of the season. The second half was a typical end of season affair with neither side playing to their full potential, result a 2-1 win for Upton who gain a place and move to 5th in the table.

Sat 4 April - Unfortunately after another extremely tough match our Reserves lost 1 - 0 away to RRR Jacobs and slip back to 6th in their league

Mon 30 March - We made hard work of winning tonight's game. After being a goal in front the saints equalised and after that we were always coming from behind just managing to sneak a winner a few minutes before the end of the game. Stalwart Mark Thompson scored the most important goal to spark the revival and was made man of the match. Other scorers for Upton were Nathan Freeman, Mike Bowell with Simon Law scoring the winner. We have now moved up to 4th in the table.

Sat 28 March - Upton reserves came back to winning ways after a disappointing run with a convincing 4 - 1 win away to second in the table Runcorn Res. After a goalless first half, a hat-trick from Nathan Freeman and a goal by Stuart Cossins produced a very good result

Sat 21 March - On the whole Upton played well - much better than last week and we were unlucky not to come away with a share of the points with Pensby's first half goal coming from a deflection. We have now slipped to 8th in the league.

Sat14 March - What can I say - lost 4 - 0 - and dropped a position to 6th in the league. A very poor performance - this is the third week in succession that I have had to report a loss - and this week there wasn't even a goal to report.

Sat 7 March - Unfortunately the reserves had a bad day going down 5 - 3 to Manor. Upton AAFC reserves scorers were, Simon Law, Patrick Walsh and Nathan Freeman.

Sat 21 February - The Reserves were very disappointing - they just never got going losing 2-1 at Hale - Nathan Freeman scored our only goal.

Sat 14 February - Upton AAFC reserves had a great away win at Mersey Royal to keep the pressure on at the top of the table, A goal in each half from veterans Ian Jones and Ian Hastings made sure of the win.

Sat 7 February - What a game. Upton Reserves 1-0 up against Manor Athletic before going in 2-1 down at half time. Chances to come back into the game went begging before Manor increased their lead to 3-1. Upton Reserves fought back with 2 very late goals to take the tie into extra time. Despite having a man sent off Manor went ahead again 4-3 and looked like holding out until Ian Hastings popped up with a goal literally with a minute to spare to take the game to penalties. Upton's other scorers were Nathan Freeman (1) and Richard Keen (2). Manor took the first penalty which was saved by our keeper. We scored 1-0. They scored their second penalty and so did we 2-1. They missed with their third and we scored 3-1. They missed with their fourth. We are through to the final and will play Ashville Res.

31 January - Whilst the reserves had to battle all the way being 3 - 1 down at one stage came back to force a draw 4 - 4 with a goal apiece for Richard Keen and Nathan Freeman and 2 penalties from Ian Hastings. A big disappointment as this was a game the reserves should have won.

Sat 24 January  Our reserves played Southport Trinity and established a 3 - 0 lead within the first thirty minutes with a goal by Mark Thompson and two from last weeks hat-trick hero Nathan Freeman. Southport Trinity had a better second half until one of the three substitutes used by Upton, Simon Andrews popped up to ensure an easy victory. This certainly keeps the pressure on at the top of the table

Sat 17 January 2009  An excellent result which keeps us in the hunt at the top of the table. A brilliant first half hat-trick from in form striker Nathan Freeman ( named man of the match) ensured the 3 points despite a late consolation goal from Ashville.

Sat 20 December - A great game where Upton came from behind on three occasions to score the decisive winning goal in the second half of extra time when central defender Stuart Cossins popped up at the far post from a great corner to head home. The other goals coming from Richard Kean and two from the influential midfield playmaker Ian Hastings (one of which was a penalty).

Sat 29 November - After taking the lead with a goal from in-form Nathan Freeman a very doubtful penalty was awarded to Capenhurst late in the game who took full advantage of their luck to level the scores.

Sat 22 November - A good game with Upton drawing 2 - 2 with Ellesmere Port. Upton scorers, Nathan Freeman and Stuart Cossins.

Sat 15 November - An excellent performance to beat current league leaders Runcorn Town Reserves 2 - 1. Upton led 2 - 0 at half time with goals from Nathan Freeman and "man of the match" Stuart Cossins. Runcorn reserves pulled one back in the second half but never looked like winning.

Sat 8 November - The reserves have been disqualified for fielding an ineligible player -  this is what happened on the day but all to no avail  - The reserves steam rollered their way into the next round of the Chester & District FA Challenge Cup with a resounding 9 - 1 victory over Chester nomads 5th's. After a slow start when Upton scored only twice in the first half super subs Danny Andrews and Dave Roberts came on for the second half to score 2 a piece. Upton's other goals coming from Simon Andrews 3 ( 2 of these were penalties), Mark Thompson 1 and an O.G.

Sat 1 November - Upton AAFC reserves faired better than the first team as Goalkeeper Andy Shelton, who had a nightmare last week, arrived late and came on as an outfield player to score 2 goals to win the game for Upton 2 - 1 after going a goal behind against Focus. Andy goes from zero to hero in the space of a week. Upton reserves remain 4th in their league.

Sat 25 October - Upton lost their way at St Werburghs going down 4 - 1. Upton's consolation goal was scored by Lee Highfield. Upton hit the woodwork, missed chances but unfortunately the Upton Keeper had an absolute nightmare.

Sat 18 October - Upton AAFC reserves drew  1 - 1 at home to Marshall's - it was an excellent game with plenty of good football and lots of entertainment. Upton's scorer was Mark Thompson.

Sat 11 October - Upton reserves were at home in the cup and ran out very worthy winners by 4 - 2 over The Wagon and Horses in the Chester District FA Challenge Cup. Upton's scorers were; Pat Walsh, Luke Jackson, Lee Highfield and Mike Bowell.

Sat 4 October - The reserves did not fair any better that the first team with Pensby in fine form running out 4-1 winners, Upton's consolation goal coming from Lee Highfield.

Mon 29 September - I have been trying to get further information about the 9 -2 defeat but no-one will talk about it ....

Sat 27 September - My man on the spot gave very little detail other than Dave Roberts scored two goals - oh - nearly forgot Manor Athletic scored 9

Sat 20 September - A very good performance by Upton, RRR Jacobs are a good young team and will do well if they stay together for a few years. Two goals for Simon Andrews (1 pen) and one from Dave Roberts ensured maximum points deservedly went to the home side and keeps them well placed in the top half of their division.

Mon 1 September - Honours even at the end of the first half but unfortunately in a very close game at Christleton the deadlock was broken with Christleton scoring just after half time and we came away with nothing on the night.

Sat 30 August - Our reserves continued their winning ways with a convincing 2 - 0 victory over Hale. A goal in each half from Mark Thompson and Jamie McIlwaine secured maximum points.

Tues 26 August - Our reserves got back to winning ways by deservedly beating local rivals Blacon Reserves 3-0.On the scoresheet again was Luke Jackson with the other goals coming from Tom Fellows and Stuart Cossins.

Sat 23 August - The Reserves took a 2-0 lead before finally conceding the match to a last minute penalty losing 3-2 to Southport Trinity Reserves. Richard Kean and Ian Hastings were Upton's scorers.

Mon 18 August - Luke Jackson scores his 4th of the season in a good win over fancied Pensby 2-1. Upton's other goal was scored by Tom Fellows.

Fri 15 August - A good start to the season for our reserves beating Mersey Royal 3 - 0. Luke Jackson getting a first half hat trick enabled us to coast home in the second half. A great start for the new management team of Ian Jones and Sean Lynch.
